Upper Secondary School of Natural Resourse Use

Learning in the Midst of Nature!

In beautiful surroundings, no longer than 5 kilometres from the city centre of Umeå, you find our school Forslundagymnasiet; an Upper Secondary School running The Natural Resource Use Programme on a small scale basis, so as to enable us to provide the best education possible for our students. Our current number of enrolled students is 180 students in Upper Secondary School and 60 adult students in different fields of commissioned education.

Our location could not be better; just around the corner you will find “Hippologum" — a top modern hippological centre and well equipped riding school. Within reach you will also find woods to stroll in, peaceful ponds, meandering brooks, small waterfalls and hidden deep ravines. You may also want to set out for a long walk to experience more of the variety of the landscape surrounding our school — nearby you find “Tavelsjöleden" — a trekking path stretching from our school and 30 kilometresthrough a breathtaking landscape all the way to “Långforsen" which is one of the rivers of Västerbotten. During this walk you will experience the most beautiful sights of the region of Umeå.

UPPERSECONDARY SCHOOL

Our school offers different fields of education ranging under The Natural Resource Use Programme: The Hippological Branch, The Agricultural Branch, The Horticultural  Branch, The Animal Husbandry  Branch and also The Natural Science Branch which gives admission to university / college studies. We can also provide an apprentice/ trainee programme designed individually.

The small scale of our school provides a calm and peaceful atmosphere making it possible for us to work as a team; close to each other and always within reach for our students — all this in order to create a platform for lifelong learning and solid growing for both students and employees.

ADULT EDUCATION

Adult education is also established at Forslundagymnasiet . Our school can offer supplementary education in gardening, and in  passing this line of education you will eventually hold a Certificate in Park and Market Garden Management. Supplementary education in the field of Dog Husbandry, Ethology and Breeding is also provided as a certified education.

LOCAL FARM SHOP

Our farm-shop, selling locally produced potatoes, vegetables, traditionally baked bread and sometimes even fresh pork, is held open between 11.30 and 16.00 every Friday. Seasonal flowers and horticultural plants are also available — grown in our own soil or green houses and always newly produced.

THE GARDENING AREA

The first impression is overwhelming; the lush surroundings and the rich plant collection is extraordinary in our northern zone. The flowers, the plants and the woods will most certainly help in reducing stress, enhancing our senses to enable us to breathe in the serenity of nature surrounding us. This is the environment our horticultural students are provided with when enrolling any of our horticultural fields of education — it is impossible not to thrive in such a soothing environment!

Our school houses its own green houses where parts of the practical moments are held. Approximately 17 tons of tomatoes are grown in them and on free land 15 tonnes of Swedish turnip, 5 tonnes of ecologically grown potatoes and carrots also.
More than 20 000 potted plants are also produced here. Moreover, our students get the opportunity to learn how to grow the popular hyacints, tulips and roses.

THE FARM AREA

Our school runs a newly rebuilt and modernised farm holding a live stock unit of 50 cattle. A newly modernised milking parlour with certified dairy production is run by our school and our students. A pig breeding establishment and a sheep stock are also successfully run by our farm.170 hectaresof arable area is used for crop growing;10 hectaresof arable area is used for ecological production only.

COMMISSIONED EDUCATION

— GRÖNA NAVET

Distance learning is offered to those already in the agricultural business as established entrepreneurs. In order to reach as many interested clients as possible try to carry through the educational projects close to our commissioned students. We also try to encourage clients in applying for government support in order to assist in developing of the agricultural enterprise in the region.

We are able to offer commissioned education in many fields, such as forestry, technique, cattle management, crop farming, business economy and farm machinery  trying to design our projects to individual demands or needs.

We aim at establishing a Centre of Competence in the region of Västerbotten in order to support regional development in the agricultural fields by supporting our entrepreneurs with qualified education and consulting.

Our school has a leading part in this work as being a hub and uniting centre by connecting representatives from  LRF — The Central Board of Agriculture,  from URF — Umeå Riding Society Board as well as from the management of Lycksele Zoo.
