Children and education
Pre-school and compulsory education
From the age of four, all children are entitled to 3 hours a day in a nursery school (This is regardless of the situation of the custodyholder). Children with places in family day-care are offered a transition to a nursery school.
Applications for Nursery school and Family daycare should be sent to the Pre-school and Compulsory School Administration, which can also supply the necessary forms (Nursery schools and Family daycare are a part of the school administration). Forms can also be printed out from the "Blanketter" page on the Umeå municipality website, or filled in and dispatched directly on the website. You can apply for a place in Daycare-centers, family day-care or a leisure centre on the appropriate form.
Go to the "blanketter page"
(The service is in Swedish)
If you need help to fill in an application, please contact the Pre-school and Compulsory School Administration.
Further information about charges, rules and procedures may be obtained from the Pre-school and Compulsory School Administration (See below, further information).
Pre school classes
Children who are six years old are entitled to attend pre-school classes. The education given in the preschool class shall stimulate the learning and development of each child, and lay the foundations for continued schooling.
Compulsory School
Basic, compulsory schooling is mandatory for children from the age of 7-16, and covers a period of nine school years. Basic, compulsory schooling is mandatory for all children, and notice of attendance is issued automatically.
Leisure centers (after-school recreation centre)
There are leisure centers for children attending pre-school classes and up to the sixth year of compulsory schooling. Most housing areas in Umeå have facilities of this nature. Leisure centres are located in compulsory school premises.
Special schools for children with intellectual impairments
For many years in Umeå, special schools have been integrated in the premises used for the regular school system.
Parents are responsible for decisions about applications for a special school, based on the overall assessments made in four reports - in the educational, social, medical and psychological fields. The criterion for entitlement to a place in a special school is that the pupil concerned is not considered capable of meeting the educational requirements of compulsory schooling due to mental disability and/or autism to an extent that affects intellectual performance.
The final decision regarding registration for a special school is taken by the person responsible for the child´s development at the special school, the school medical officer and the school psychologist, as delegated by the Education Committee.
