Prevention
The first step is to purchase and install a fire alarm, since this is a cheap form of life insurance. A fire alarm should be located close to your bedroom. If your home has more than one floor, you should have a fire alarm on each floor. You should also invest in some form of fire-extinguishing equipment. The next step is to establish possible routes for evacuating the building in an emergency, and to check this out with other members of the family and agree on an assembly point. Information to small children is particularly important in this context.

Procedures in the case of fire

• Take steps to save anyone in immediate danger
• Call 112 to alarm the Fire Service (you will be connected with SOS Alarm)
• Be prepared to answer questions to provide full information for the emergency services. This does not involve any delay since another operator will be simultaneously issuing orders to the emergency services concerned.
• Put out the fire - if possible!
• Restrict the fire by closing doors, etc. If the fire is too large to be extinguished without danger to life or health, you may be able to stop it spreading by closing the door.
• Leave the premises!
• Go out and meet the Fire Brigade and show them where to go.
