Food control

The Environmental and Public Health office supervises the handling of food in restaurants, shops, catering facilities, etc. to ensure that Umeå´s inhabitants can purchase food of the quality advertised, and are protected against infections or foodstuffs which are a health hazard in some other respect. Since food represents a considerable proportion of household expenditure, the consumer must be able to demand high standards of honesty, quality and hygiene.

If you are dissatisfied with a purchase because the packaging is damaged, for example, or the product does not taste good, you should first contact the store where you bought the product. It is usually possible to come to an agreement on some form of compensation.

If, on the other hand, you suspect food poisoning or you become aware of circumstances which, as a consumer, you find unacceptable in terms of food-handling hygiene, you should contact the Environmental and Public Health Office.
