Road maintenance in winter

The municipality´s assignment is to maintain roads in wintertime as effectively as possible, based on predetermined plans and routines. It is not economically feasible to provide sufficient resources to ensure that snow clearance operations can be conducted simultaneously throughout the municipality. As a result, the municipality has decided to give priority to streets, paths and cycle tracks for which the need is considered to be greatest.

Snow and ice
The municipality and property owners have joint responsibility as regards snow clearance and measures to deal with slippery conditions. The municipality gives priority to thoroughfares, bus routes and paths and cycle tracks.

The National Roads Administration is responsible for the E4 and E12 routes, and for the Hissjövägen, Holmsundsvägen and Ersmarksvägen roads.

Points to bear in mind

  • Do not hinder snow clearance operations
  • Respect parking bans and the date-parking system
  • Snow clearance is conducted on an area basis
  • Snowploughing operations do not include provision of a free space in front of properties
  • Snow from garage entrances and properties may not be deposited on streets
  • Snow removed from roofs must be immediately transported from streets
  • When it snows, take the location of garbage containers into account in the event in order to facilitate collection operations.

Priorities

Road maintenance districts:

The Community Planning Office is responsible for road maintenance and clearance operations under winter conditions in most parts of the street network in the Umeå urban area, with the exception of the E4 and E12 routes, the 363 and 364 roads, and sections of the university and hospital areas.

High-priority streets
It is not economically feasible to provide sufficient resources to ensure that snow clearance operations can be conducted simultaneously throughout the urban area. As a result, the Community Planning Office has decided to give priority to the central area, main roads and routes used by municipal bus services.
