Public transportation and mobility

Transportation is fundamental for all relations, organizations and regions. Umeå has always been strategically placed in northern Europe, at an intersection where a constant flow ow people, ideas, commodities and products has passed through – from north to south, and from east to west.

On a vertical level, Umeå connects all northern transports with the rest of the country and down to Europe, and on a horizontal level, transports from Mo i Rana, Norway and the Atlantic Ocean passes through Umeå on their way to Ostrobothnia, Finland and Russia. This junction is one of the reasons why Umeå doesn’t fear the unknown, but remains an open, inclusive city. There are no strangers here.

We like to see ourselves as members of different communities, and as an Umeå resident, you automatically become part of a number of new ones – the Umeå region, the county of Västerbotten, the North, Arctis, Sapmi, the Barents region and several others. At the same time, we have always been aware that we are geographically a long way from the obvious centre of attention as Stockholm, the continent and Silicon Valley. Therefore we have always put pride in being pioneers when it comes to communications – as an early developed and democratic broadband, which has provided great conditions for e.g. world-leading e-health and becoming a lighthouse-city in Europe for smart cities. Good communications is a prerequisite for all development, where we can come together, pursue dialogues and development. We are leaving the Network society, and are entering the Inspiration society – a place where we can benefit from each other´s experiences and utilize the raw potential in the latest technology.

In practical terms, Umeå City airport connects Umeå with the rest of Sweden and Europe via dozens of departures every day. The fast train leaves several times a day and takes you to Stockholm in about six hours. The ferries to Vaasa connects Västerbotten to Ostrobothnia and are an important link in the east-west-traffic – and with a brand new ferry incoming, the connections over Kvarken will look even more fun and bright, over the coming years.

The more delicate traffic routes within the city limits, consists of densely woven bike- and pedestrian paths, along with the practical local transportation system Ultra, which provides dozens of lines.
