Umeå in the spotlight for Design
Design and Umeå at the end of May have been familiar to many for a long time. Then the design world turns its attention to Umeå in connection with the Umeå Institute of Design's internationally coveted students graduating. This spring, Umeå is even more in the spotlight when Design S – Swedish Design Awards – is arranged on May 31. Among the nominees are connections to Umeå, something we can find out more about when Svensk Form Västerbotten organizes a Designers Thursday the day after the award ceremony.
Among the nominees are a wide variety of creative solutions in different areas of design and architecture. In one of the 12 categories, Textiles, we find two nominees with a connection to Umeå and the business incubator eXpression Umeå. It is Viktoria Melinder, who attended the latest round of the Cultural Heritage Program at eXpression. And it is Beskow von Post, Susanne Beskow and Caroline von Post, who have received support from a business program at eXpression.
CAKE, nominated in the category Industrial Design and Product Design B2B and B2C, also has a certain connection to Umeå and then via Umeå Institute of Design. The student Fanny Jonsson has recently worked together with CAKE and developed a product, The Kibb.
The nominees in the different categories have been selected by a jury consisting of experienced and reputable people in the design industry. The winners of Design S 2023 will be presented on May 31, 2023 in connection with the award ceremony in Väven in Umeå.
Designers Thursday with the theme sustainability, hope and originality!
Svensk Form Västerbotten welcomes you to a design talk with three of the nominees, Viktoria Melinder, Susanne Beskow and Caroline von Post, Thursday 1 June at 11.30-12.00. In addition, Svensk Form's CEO Mats Widbom participates. The moderator is Anna Burman Sjöberg and the venue for the event is Great Hub City at Kungsgatan 63 D, which is open from 11.15. Free admission!

Design S – Swedish Design Awards takes place on the evening of May 31 at the cultural center Väven, located by the Ume River. Design S is also an invitational event. Design S is presented together with Balticgruppen and Design by Umeå.
