Karl worked for several years in the care sector before taking on the role of HR administrator.
Karl makes a difference in Umeå's care sector
After seven years "on the floor," Karl landed a job as an HR administrator at Umeå Municipality. Now, he helps ensure that operations are well-staffed and that work flows smoothly.
Since 1994, Karl Hampusson has lived in Umeå, after being adopted from Thailand as a child. Growing up in the Haga and Sandbacka neighborhoods, he sought out work in the healthcare and care sectors.
How did you end up in the municipality’s care unit?
I started as a substitute in preschools and stayed there for quite a while. But then I transitioned into disability care and was offered a permanent position there. That’s how it happened—I stayed and kept working, gradually taking on more responsibility over time.
What does a typical workday look like for you?
It depends! Right now, I focus a lot on short-term staffing. A unit might call in and say they’re short on staff and need more people on-site. So, I handle those requests and make sure there are enough employees available when needed. We also stay in touch with substitutes who are already trained in the operations. It’s a balancing act with scheduling.
What do you like most about your job?
I love that I get to talk to people a lot and have daily contact with them. I also enjoy the variety of tasks. But most of all, it’s the feeling of helping out and ensuring that operations have the resources they need to function.
What experiences have been valuable in your current role?
Being attentive. The most valuable thing I’ve brought into this role is my experience working "on the floor" for many years—I know what it’s like. That has helped me a lot. I worked directly in operations for seven years. It’s only recently that I transitioned to the administrative side.

Karl believes the sector needs more people and that there are plenty of job opportunities, even for those without formal education.
How do you see the current needs in the industry?
I see that we need more people. A lot more workers. There are so many positions to fill, and we’ll need even more staff for years to come. I also see many students taking on extra jobs in this sector and in healthcare in general. That’s really great because we truly need more people.
I entered the industry through hands-on experience right after high school. So, a higher education isn’t always necessary—you can work your way into it!
How does your work/life balance look?
Pretty well, I’d say! It’s been an adjustment. I’ve worked mornings, evenings, nights, and holidays—all kinds of shifts. Now, I work Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM, and it works well for me!
We also have access to wellness benefits. I got a gym membership through work at a local gym, which is great since they have locations near both my job and home.
I also have the option to work remotely one day a week. But for me, it’s good to get out and meet people. I find in-person interaction more enjoyable.
What’s the best thing about Umeå?
That everything is within biking distance. Sure, there are some hills, but everything feels close. And it has everything you need! It’s close to both forests and countryside, with great swimming spots, and you can bike to them. I think that’s fantastic!
