Many New Jobs in Umeå's Growing Job Market

Umeå's job market has grown by over 4,000 new jobs in two years, according to new figures from Statistics Sweden (SCB). The city's broad industry base and investments in sustainable growth are highlighted as key success factors.

Umeå continues to show strong development in terms of the number of new jobs. In fact, the growth in new jobs currently exceeds the population increase. This is confirmed by new statistics from SCB.

– "In two years, more than 4,000 new jobs have been created, and in 2022 alone, Umeå's job market grew by 1,860 net jobs. This places us high compared to other Swedish municipalities," says Peter Juneblad, Director of Business Development, Umeå Municipality.

Jobs in Many Different Industries

Peter Juneblad believes that the municipality's unique industry diversity creates the conditions for long-term and sustainable growth. One year, the industrial sector may grow, another year it's the hospitality industry, and recently it's been technical consulting firms. Currently, Umeå is creating more jobs than residents, which can partly be explained by a large number of students working part-time and high job mobility.

Umeå Continues to Grow Through New Jobs

Umeå has a unique position as the largest city in the region, with uninterrupted growth for over 50 years, driven by a continuous influx of new jobs and businesses.

– "These are, of course, very positive figures. Northern Sweden is growing, and there are significant investments being made that are creating entirely new opportunities for our part of Europe. Umeå has a unique position as the largest city in the region, with uninterrupted growth for over 50 years, driven by a constant influx of new jobs and companies," says Peter Juneblad.

Investments in Sustainability are Paying Off

Hans Lindberg (S), Chairman of the Municipal Executive Board in Umeå, is pleased with the new figures from SCB:

– "The statistics show that Umeå Municipality has made the right choices, that we should continue to work broadly and maintain the belief that all industries are equally important. Growth and conditions for entrepreneurship are based on a collaboration between the municipality, public actors, businesses, and above all the wider community. Our investments in infrastructure, culture, and, above all, social sustainability are becoming increasingly important for businesses to have the right conditions, especially now that the competition for talent is intensifying. Umeå knows how to grow sustainably over time," says Hans Lindberg.

More Job Statistics from SCB

According to SCB, Umeå's job market has grown from 53,930 employees in 2011 to 71,798 employees in 2023. Over the past three years (2020–2022), the number of jobs in, for example, information and communication companies has increased by 18%, companies in law, economics, science, and technology; companies in rental, property services, travel services, and other support services by 14%. The biggest winner during this period has been the hotel and restaurant sector, which has increased the number of jobs by a massive 40%, marking a clear recovery after the pandemic years.
